Attawapiskat

Founded in 1893 by Catholic missionaries, Attawapiskat is approximately 130 air miles from Moosonee and sits on the north side of the Attawapiskat River. Attawapiskat is accessible by air, water and in the winter by the winter road. Band records show that the members of Attawapiskat survived three major floods; 1934, 1950 and 1966. Fortunately, no lives were lost.

In the early 1900's the Catholic Church built St. Mary's hospital in

Attawapiskat. After 1969, the hospital was turned over to the Provincial

Government and renamed the James Bay General Hospital.

James Bay General Hospital provide outpatient and emergency services and 8 Chronic Care beds, 5 Medical/Surgical Beds and 3 Pediatrics Beds in this location.
