Residents of the island enjoy all modern conveniences: a licenced day care centre, retail and grocery stores, a full postal outlet, five churches, a branch of the Bank of Montreal, a hotel, two restaurants, and Pizza Hut and KFC franchises.
Schools include a public elementary, a Christian elementary, a First Nation Composite (elementary and secondary), as well as Northern College's Moose Factory campus, where learners can take on-site of distance post-secondary courses. In addition , a wide selection of college and university courses are available through Contact North, a distance education network.
Acess to Moose Factory from Moosonee is by boat in the spring, summer and fall. In the winter, there is an ice road. A helicopter shuttle is used during freeze-up and break-up of the river.
The weather is comparable to other Northern Ontario communities, with one exception, it can change very quickly. The rule of thumb is, Be Prepared!
