Moose Factory is an island community located between the shores of the Moose River 10 – 12 miles from where it empties into the salt water of James Bay. To get to Moose Factory you must travel to Moosonee which is located 1.5 miles across the river on the mainland. Moosonee is accessible by air and train only. After arriving in Moosonee, depending on the time of year, you can then travel to Moose Factory by boat in the summer, by ski-doo or vehicle during the winter months. During freeze up and break up, helicopter is the only mode of transportation available to travel to Moose Factory.
You can take a Ontario Northland Railway from Cochrane. Moosonee is situated about 186 miles north of Cochrane so you could drive to Cochrane and then take the train to Moosonee – this train trip takes about five hours. In the summer there are 2 trains available called the Polar Bear Express and The Little Bear. The Polar Bear Express is slightly faster and more of a tourist train (runs summer only). The Little Bear runs year round.
Alternately you could fly from Timmins with AirCreebec. There are connecting flights from Toronto to Timmins via Air Canada. Then AirCreebec provides service from Timmins to Moosonee. The flight from Toronto to Timmins is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. You will change planes in Timmins and the flight to Moosonee takes approximately 1 hour (Note: You will need to pickup your luggage in Timmins and transfer it to AirCreebec at this time!)
