Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin

The nutrition department is located in the Weeneebayko General Hospital and serves the communities of Moose Factory, Moosonee, Fort Albany, Kashechewan, Attawapiskat and Peawanuck in a culturally and socio-economic sensitive manner.
The dietetic department consists of a dietitian whose responsibilities encompass many aspects of the profession: in patient care, out-patient clinics, community nutrition and some food service components.
At the in-patient setting, a variety of health conditions requiring nutrition management are seen ranging from diabetes, renal, cardiac, tube feedings, pulmonary, obesity, obstetrics, palliative, geriatrics and pediatrics.
The out-patient counseling service covers many of the above conditions except for diabetes which is linked to the diabetes program. Clients can receive this service through office visits, home visits, telephone consult (for coastal clients) and nutrition clinics upon community visits.
A large portion of community nutrition involves the CPNP (Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program). This program is delivered for the communities listed above and is aimed at improving the health of pregnant and breastfeeding women and promoting breastfeeding through the delivery of food vouchers, providing incentives for breastfeeding, supporting pre and post-natal activities conducted in the coastal communities. Other community activities such as school presentations and supermarket tours are conducted as requested.
Finally, the dietitian liaises with the Manager of Dietary Services at W.G.H. to review therapeutic menus for inpatients as well as the cafeteria menu.
Overall, the nutrition department aims to optimize the health of the population of the Mushkegowuk territory through food and nutrition.
