Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin

The Physiotherapy Department at Weeneebayko General Hospital is the provider of rehabilitation services to Moose Factory, Moosonee and all the coastal communities along the western shores of James Bay.
The department houses one full time physiotherapist and physiotherapy aide. The primary responsibility of the physiotherapy department is inpatient care. Outpatient services are also provided and referrals received are prioritized according to acuity. Home assessments are performed for the less mobile clientele or to ensure safety in the home setting. If the client lives in one of the coastal communities, arrangements are made for clients to be flown from their community to receive physiotherapy intervention at WGH for an established period of time. Physiotherapy visits to the coastal communities are also scheduled on a needs-basis.
The department organizes regular Occupational Therapy services. Visits occur approximately monthly and services provided include wheelchair assessments, seating, and adaptive/environmental aids.
The physiotherapy department organizes monthly clinics at Weeneebayko General Hospital. A visiting Orthotist from Kingston conducts a day clinic for all client in the region. Assessments include custom knee braces and ankle foot orthosis (AFO's). Follow up appointments are booked for all clients as required.
The physiotherapy department hosts an Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies clinic at Weeneebayko General Hospital. A visiting Psysiatrist from Kingston conducts a day clinic for all clients in the region approximately 3 times each year.
The Physiotherapy department participates with telemedicine sessions at Weeneebayko General Hospital involving active physiotherapy/occupational therapy clinics. Telemedicine sessions are booked with a Rheumatologist and an Amputee Rehab Team.
Various treatment approaches are utilized according to the needs of the clientele. Modalities available in the department include: ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, T.E.N.S., paraffin treatments, cryotherapy, conductive heat (hot packs), acupuncture (as per the therapist’s qualifications), and splinting.

Weeneebayko General Hospital has recently been approved for (3) three additional dialysis machines, giving us a total of (7) seven machines. This will allow more patients to return and reside in the Mushkegowuk Territory to receive their dialysis treatment.
